Gabon Suspends Social Media Amid Rising Unrest

Gabon’s media regulator has ordered the suspension of social media platforms “until further notice”, citing concerns that online content has fueled conflict and deepened divisions in the country.

Reasons for the Suspension

The High Authority for Communication (HAC) gave a televised statement on Tuesday evening, citing:

  • Spread of false information
  • Cyberbullying
  • Unauthorised disclosure of personal data

Platforms Affected

  • Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, WhatsApp have been restricted, according to internet monitoring group NetBlocks.
  • Most providers complied, though Gabon Telecom, the largest national telecom, reportedly allowed limited access.

Context

  • Gabon is led by Gen Brice Oligui Nguema, who became president after a 2023 coup and won elections last year.
  • The country is facing growing social unrest, with teachers and civil servants striking over pay and working conditions.
  • Social media is particularly important for younger Gabonese, who use it both for social interaction and business promotion.

Impact on Citizens

  • A restaurant owner in Libreville told the BBC that the suspension would hurt his business, as 40% of customers were attracted via social media advertising.
  • He warned the move could slow the country’s development, saying:“We don't even know if we are moving forward with global development or sliding backward into total underdevelopment.”
  • In contrast, a taxi driver expressed little concern, suggesting that:“For the authorities to take such a decision, something must have certainly prompted it.”

The suspension reflects increasing government control over online spaces amid political tension and highlights the economic and social reliance on social media in Gabon.
