Trump Threatens “Consequences” Over Netflix Board Member Remarks

Former President Donald Trump escalated tensions with Netflix over the weekend, warning the streaming giant it would “pay the consequences” if it does not remove board member Susan Rice. Rice, who has served on Netflix’s board of directors since 2018, previously held senior diplomatic roles, including U.S. ambassador to the United Nations during the Obama administration.

Trump’s comments followed Rice’s appearance on the podcast Stay Tuned with Preet, hosted by Preet Bharara, where she argued that corporations aligning themselves politically could face accountability should Democrats regain power. Rice suggested that companies abandoning established policies or “taking a knee” to political pressure may not be forgiven in the future.

In response, Trump posted on his social media platform Truth Social, calling for Rice’s immediate dismissal and criticizing her qualifications. His post included a screenshot from far-right activist Laura Loomer, who accused Rice of benefiting from a potential Netflix–Warner Bros. merger and alleged political conflicts tied to the Obamas’ production company, Higher Ground.

While Trump did not specify what consequences Netflix might face, the company’s proposed acquisition of Warner Bros. would require approval from federal regulators. Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos reportedly met with Trump prior to the announcement of the deal. Trump later described Netflix as a “great company” but acknowledged that its growing market share could draw scrutiny.

The situation echoes a previous instance in which Trump publicly called for the dismissal of Lisa Monaco from Microsoft after criticism from Loomer. Monaco remains in her role.

As regulatory review of major media consolidations continues, the political dimensions surrounding corporate governance and executive appointments appear likely to remain in focus.
